The Board of Directors of the United Way of Milton invites submission of applications to fill four vacancies on the Board; each position is for a three year term, open for re-appointment. Potential Board members must be at least 18 years of age.
United Way of Milton is looking for individuals who are committed to helping Milton’s children, youth, families, seniors and those with special needs through sound leadership and fulfilling our vision – ‘To lead in building a strong, healthy and inclusive community’. As a candidate, you are a proactive decision maker, have sound judgment and a willingness to contribute to your community. Individuals with skills in the following areas are being sought: Human Resources; Legal; Fund Raising; Communications; Information Technology.
In order to reflect the diverse nature of our community the board encourages application from all residents.
As a member of the Board team, your role will be to assist in leading the organization in fulfilling its mission. There is a time commitment expectation of between 7 - 10 hours per month to prepare for and attend meetings, participate on sub committee's, and engage in other Board business. Traditionally, our Board meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, from 6:30 -9:00 p.m.
Our Board utilizes a governance model of oversight. As a Board Member, you will be actively involved in directing the organization's mission and overall strategy. You will contribute to and foster relationships to sustain the organizations financial health. You will exercise sound judgment and advocate effectively for the organization and build support within the community.

Through these agencies, you could help Milton’s seniors, children and youth, new parents and families, and those with special needs…depending on your skills and personality.
Caring, Nurturing Join Girls Inc. or become a Big Brother or Big Sister to a youngster in the community and watch them grow with your guidance and encouragement Help someone cope with blindness, deafness or illness Provide telephone listening, friendship, referrals and crisis intervention by manning a phone at the Distress Centre
Positive, Energetic Visit someone confined to home due to age, infirmity, disability Offer to transport someone to medical appointments through Canadian Red Cross Get involved with teens in after-school programs, group social events
Knowledge and Learning Tutor reading and writing skills through Literacy North Halton Read to the blind or to young children whose parents are unable to help
"Survivor" Capability Have you lived through the loss of a loved one or survived a major illness? Are you a recovering alcoholic, drug addict? Share your experiences and help others to “survive”
Business Skills Use finance, marketing, sales, management skills on the Board of Directors of any of United Way’s agencies or on United Way’s own Board of Directors or sub-committees like Allocations, Campaign, Communications, Finance
Organizational Strengths, Social Skills Help organize a special event or fundraiser like United Way’s annual Dinner or the Christmas House Tour Volunteer to help coordinate a workshop or seminar or volunteer training session
Volunteering may only take a few hours a week or even a month. Regardless of the amount of time you have available, you can find a satisfying fit for your skills, interests and schedule. Becoming a volunteer has other benefits too. For teens, it can provide those essential ‘community service’ credits and it may offer an insight into a future career. (It is also a credential that many employers look for in a resume.) You may find volunteering to be the most satisfying ‘job’ you ever have.
