Milton-"Thank you Milton, you did it!" announced Lesley Mansfield, President of United Way of Milton. "Exceeding our 2009 target in this difficult economic time was a great accomplishment by all of our Milton residents, businesses and employees. " United Way of Milton set a target of $630,000 when it kicked off its 2009 campaign last September, knowing that it was going to be very difficult but realizing that the needs of the local service agencies needed to be met. When all the pledges and donations were tallied, staff announced that $641,829 had actually been raised. The previous year when the same campaign goal of $630,000 was set, United Way came in three per cent short at $610,000. "Our success this year is a tribute to the people of Milton who recognized the importance of continuing the work of over two dozen local agencies and organizations where United Way funds programs," explained Ms. Mansfield. "Beyond that, it is a tribute to the hard work of United Way volunteers and staff, led for the second year in a row by Campaign Chair Wendy Schau. Wendy's efforts contributed greatly to the momentum and success of this year's campaign." Local businesses and employee groups account for a large portion of contributions every year and this year was no exception. Payroll designations are also essential, coming in from people who work outside Milton but who name the United Way of Milton to receive their donations. Individual givings--one time or monthly pledges--are also important, as are the successful public fundraising events United Way stages every year including the Mayor's Golf Tournament, the new Curling Bonspiel and the annual Christmas House Tour. This year's campaign was supported by an innovative series of advertisements through newspapers, direct mail, posters and more. With graphic photos, it showed what can happen if we "Do Nothing" or "Do Something" about social problems in our community. The message positively stated that "In Milton, we choose to Do Something!" "Clearly our message was heard this year and the people of Milton responded generously," commented Campaign Chair Wendy Schau. "We all want to create stronger families and safer neighbourhoods. We all want to develop happy, healthy children and teens. Most of us recognize the challenges faced by our aging population and by those faced with adversity, but recognizing the need is only the beginning. In Milton, we "did something about it!" This year's funding will be allocated to specific local programs addressing identified needs in the community...planning has already begun for the 2010 campaign. United Way is always looking for volunteers on committees, so if you're interested in helping out with the 2010 campaign, please call 905-875-2550 or email For further details, please call: |
