Poverty is an ever present social issue that affects all of us but is often hidden from view and overlooked. Did you know that nearly 10% of people in Halton live in poverty? That’s about 43,000 people! If all those people stood in a line it would stretch from our factory all the way down to Bronte Harbour and into the Lake. That’s a lot of families and children living below a combined family income of $33, 930.
Most of us are very fortunate to have been given many opportunities in life which allow us to live comfortable lives. Many others, however, are not so fortunate and are not presented with these same opportunities. After having understood these social imbalances within my home town I decided to do something about this and so I began helping those less fortunate by volunteering with Food For Life (FFL). My role with FFL entails me packaging baked goods at a bakery in Oakville at the end of their day. There are hundreds of items to be packaged that would have normally gone to waste. I pack my car to the brim with bags of bread and pastries, then take them to a small warehouse on Kerr Street where they are then brought to a larger warehouse for sorting and distribution within the Halton region. Despite our best efforts, there is still a growing need for this basic necessity of life in our community. Food For Life is always short of volunteers.
Food For Life is a food recovery program. Every day, seven days a week, FFL collects perishable food such as baked goods, fruit, vegetables, dairy, and meat, from grocery stores, restaurants and bakeries in the Halton region. This food is delivered same day to over 40 community social service organizations and over 20 outreach programs to help fill the gap between social assistance and living costs.
No man, woman or child should have to go to bed hungry while stores, restaurants and other food suppliers are tossing good food in our landfills.
